A graphic novel set in a pumpkin patch on Halloween night, where we follow two best friends on a mission to find true love & snacks? You can count on me wanting to read this the moment it was released!
The atmosphere of the pumpkin patch and the Halloween season really came through. Pumpkin patches aren’t a thing in the Netherlands and we barely celebrate Halloween, but reading this really made me want to experience them the way these characters do (maybe someday, I will be able to….).
Deja and Josiah are great characters, very distinguishable and totally adorable in their friendship and compassion for each other. They spend their last evening at the pumpkin patch, having an adventure and experiencing the patch in a way they haven’t before. Deja is destined to help Josiah in talking to the one girl he has his eye on for years.
Deja has dated both guys and girls! It was treated like such a natural and normal thing, which was a really nice thing to read about in a YA novel! I would like to see more of this in YA.
The art in Pumpkinheads was gorgeous, I loved Fath Eric Hicks’ use of warm colours. Between the story and imagery, I was really feeling the crisp fall atmosphere. It made me crave a Pumpkin Spice Latte the moment I finished this book.
If you’re in the mood for a quick adorable and seasonal read, definitely pick up Pumpkinheads. I can’t imagine anyone hating this novel!
